Best Syntax Highlighting Themes for Technical Presentations

Published: October 2026 · Technical Design

Presenting code to an audience—whether on a conference hall projector, across a compressed Zoom screen share, or on mobile LinkedIn feeds—presents unique legibility hurdles that daily code editors never face.

The Three Laws of Presentation Code Legibility

1. High Luminance Contrast (WCAG AAA Target)

Aim for a minimum 7:1 contrast ratio between the code background and primary keywords. High-contrast deep blacks with bright amber, cyan, or coral keywords ensure clarity under harsh venue lighting.

2. Limit Token Coloring to 4 Dominant Hues

Avoid themes with 10+ rainbow shades. Reserve prominent accent colors for functions, keywords, and strings, leaving punctuation and delimiters in neutral tones.

3. Monospace Fonts with Distinct Glyphs

Always choose coding typefaces engineered with distinct character disambiguation (such as JetBrains Mono, Fira Code, or SF Mono) so zeros (0) and capital O's, or 1, l, and I are unmistakable.
